HOG MEMBER OF THE MONTH "January 2011" Don and Shelly Curry HOG Members of the Month Some people say we are too old to ride. We’ve been married for 14 years, “dated” for 7 years before that, have grandchildren and are considered basically responsible adults. We should have had enough fun already. Don said “NO WAY!” So five years ago he bought his first Harley, a 2006 Sportster. He had ridden motorcycles since he was 16, both dirt bikes and street bikes, and was comfortable with the speed and the “fit”. His full figured wife was not as comfortable on the fax rattlesnake skin seat. So we traded that bike for a 2007 Harley Ultra Classic, and then traded last year for our current ride, a Red 2010 Screaming Eagle Ultra Classic. Don also has a 2008 Harley Rocker C for when he wants to ride solo. Riding behind him, closer together than we have been in a long time, I feel the freedom, comfort and security of riding in the wind. I must say Don is a much more avid biker than I’ve ever seen before. Riding to work every day except when it snows, bugging me to take the cycle when we go shopping, knowing I can’t buy anything bigger than the tour pack will hold, and scheduling longer rides whenever the weather and work allows. Don successfully completed his own Iron Butt Saddlesore 1000, in May 2009, driving 1,074 miles to Sturgis, Michigan and back in 22 1/2 hours and he hopes to “do it again” one day. Don has certainly convinced me that the sites, smells and fun on the cycle have been worth it. The view from mountain tops to lake shores on the Harley is amazing. Who could ask for a better place than the east coast to see sites close to home or a couple hours away: the Grand Canyon of PA, Sodus Point, NY, wine country, NY, and the mountains of Sullivan County are our favorites. Its been so interesting to meet new people whether on the cycle or those just watching us suit up, they’ll say “I had a bike like that once……..”and the conversation begins. Then there’s the young ones that look at our big gleaming red bike in envy and hope some day they can get one. We have made wonderful friends participating in Harley events for the HOG chapter and Cox’s HD dealership. Our common interest of riding has made for some unforgettable “snapshots” that we won’t soon forget. Responsibilities at home have limited us to day trips, but we have years of riding ahead of us, and we expect 2011 to be a remarkable year. We believe in the words of a George Strait country song…..”it’s not the breath you take, it’s the moments that take your breath away.” |
